- 1
Fry the 1 pound of medium ground beef in a pan over medium heat until cooked, breaking it up as you go.
💡 You can use Italian sausage or a combination of beef and pork sausage instead.
🔥 medium heat
- 2
Push the meat to one side and sauté 1/2 small chopped onion and 3 cloves of chopped garlic until fragrant.
💡 The aroma will tell you when it's ready.
- 3
Mix the meat, onion, and garlic together. Add 1 jar of pasta sauce (plus a bit of water to clean the jar) and season with 1 tsp salt, 1 tsp ground black pepper, and 2 tsp Italian seasoning. Simmer for 4 to 5 minutes.
💡 Adding extra water makes the sauce saucy enough to cook the ravioli.
🔥 simmer⏱ 4 to 5 minutes
- 4
In a casserole dish, spread half of the sauce mixture on the bottom. Layer 1 pack of precooked ravioli over the sauce. Top with dollops of the ricotta, a layer of mozzarella, a dusting of parmesan, and 2 cups of old cheddar cheese.
💡 The sauce helps cook the ravioli without pre-boiling them.
- 5
Repeat the layers: add the remaining sauce, a layer of ravioli, dollops of ricotta, mozzarella, parmesan, and the remaining cheddar cheese.
💡 If you don't have ricotta, cottage cheese works well too.
- 6
Top the assembly with a dusting of Italian seasoning, 1 tbsp fresh basil, and 1/2 tsp hot pepper flakes (optional). Cover with aluminum foil.
💡 Covering ensures the ravioli cooks through.
- 7
Bake in a preheated oven at 375°F for 25 minutes. Remove the foil and bake for another 10 minutes until the cheese is browned and bubbling.
💡 The cheese should be beautifully browned at the end.
🔥 375°F⏱ 25 minutes⏱ 10 minutes
Tips
- You can use different types of ravioli, such as beef-filled ones.
- If you don't have ricotta, cottage cheese is a great substitute.
- Covering the dish during the first part of baking ensures the ravioli cooks properly.
- The extra water in the sauce is important to ensure the frozen/pre-cooked ravioli cooks through.
